The Jorge and Dragon

Tempest

I DIDN’T ENJOY the ride over to Jorge’s as much as I had the first time I’d ridden with Anita.

Part of it was because of what she’d said. No matter what I’d told Felix, I felt a little worried over how blasé she’d been about starving a supernatural of magic in order to kill them. It made me wonder about whether someone had actually used that tactic on my aunt. Sure, she’d been old and losing her powers, as LeBeau had said. But what if part of her loss had been due to knotweed?

Maybe we should drop by the Ondines again. I want to know more about this knotweed, and how bad the infestation on the estate is, I said to Felix.

Definitely. You’ve just come into your power as a witch. We can’t afford to have it sucked away by a weed.

I blinked.

Huh. I’d been thinking about the knotweed’s effects on my aunt. It hadn’t even occurred to me that I might be affected by it.

It should have, Felix pointed out. You’re a witch now, and you need to care about things like power and magic. If you won’t care about it for your own sake, do it for mine. As your familiar, I won’t last long if you kick the bucket.

Couldn’t you just find another witch?

I could. But the longer I stay tied to you, the more our life forces get intertwined. One day, your life and mine will be one and the same. That means that I’ll keel over soon after you do—well, not that soon, since I’m pretty sure I’ll have enough juice to keep going for a bit. But familiars that have been bonded for years usually suffer the same fates as their witches. So take care not to fall off any more broomsticks, okay?

Don’t even mention that, I groaned inwardly. Then a light bulb suddenly lit up in my head. Hey! Did someone find my aunt’s familiar? She was a witch, wasn’t she? Which means that she had a familiar, who might know who killed her, or at least what happened on the day she died!

Brilliant deduction, Watson. Unfortunately, Jack’s already been investigating that. You must have missed it during your interrogation, since you were still so clueless about all things magic, but I overheard him mentioning to someone else at the station that Violet’s hedgehog familiar had gone missing and couldn’t be found. Current suspicion is that she was killed too, or that she’s in hiding.

Oh. My heart sank. Of course, Jack had already thought about questioning my aunt’s familiar. This was the difference between a real investigator and an amateur.

Cheer up, it was a good idea to try to talk to your aunt’s familiar. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on every witch’s familiar, since they’re always in the know when it comes to their witch’s inner thoughts and emotions.

Noted, I said, before I hunched down on Anita’s broomstick.

We were slowly spiraling down over a funny-looking building situated in the middle of a stone bridge arching over a wide canal.
